Ecotourism in Indonesia (part 2)

Tourism
Tourism is an activity that contains elements of pleasure with a variety of tourist motivation to visit a location. Ecotourism should also contain this element. Therefore, products and services, tourism in our region must also provide elements of fun to be sold and accepted by the market.

Economic
Ecotourism is also open economic opportunities for the community even more so if the tour is done using local resources such as transportation, accommodation and guide services. Ecotourism is run must provide income and profit  that can be sustainable. To be able to make that happen, the important thing to do is provide the best services and tourism products and quality. To be able to serve and provide quality tourism products, it would be better if the revenue from tourism is not only used for conservation activities at the local level but also help the development of knowledge of local communities, for example with the development of skills through training to improve the types of businesses / attractions that are served at the village level.

Participation of local communities
Public participation will arise, when nature / culture that provides the benefits of direct / indirect for the community. Bias for the benefit of natural / that culture must be managed and maintained.
Such a reciprocal relationship between tourist attractions-management benefits derived from ecotourism and participation. Community participation is essential to the success of ecotourism in a tourist destination. This can start from ourselves. Do not too hope the government will do all things because we also have the same role in the construction in our area. Participation in tourism activities will provide direct benefits for us, good for nature conservation and economics. If we are to maintain sustainable and clean permanent nature, then we will personally enjoy the natural preservation of these, if we play a role in tourism activities, then we also will benefit economically.

Ecotourism in Indonesia (part 1)

Year 2002 is the year of Ecotourism and Mountains in Indonesia. From the various workshops and discussions held during the year in various regions in Indonesia, both by central and local government, formulated 5 (five) basic principles of ecotourism development in Indonesia, namely:

Preservation
The principle of sustainability in tourism is ecotourism activities that do not cause damage and pollution of the environment and local culture.
One way of implementing this principle is to use local resources are energy efficient and managed by the community. Not only people, but tourists also have to respect and participate in the preservation of nature and culture in the areas he visited. Better yet, if the income from ecotourism can be used for conservation activities at the local level. For example, by the way a percentage of the profits contributed to buy the trash and pay the person who will manage the waste.

Education
Tourism activities are carried out should provide an element of education. This can be done in several ways such as by providing interesting information such as name and benefits of plants and animals that exist in the vicinity of tourist areas, the leaves are used for drug or in everyday life, or indigenous beliefs and customs of local communities. This educational activity for tourists will encourage the preservation of nature and culture. This activity can be supported by a tool such as brochures, leaflets, booklets or information boards.

Definition Of Ecotourism (part 2)

Ecotourism in terms of the market

The word always refers to the eco tourism activities which form support conservation. Ecotourism is growing not only as a concept but also as a tourism product (eg: package tours). Lately, a tour package with the concept of "eco" or "green" became a trend in tourism market. The concept of "back to nature" tend to be chosen by the majority of consumers who begin to care about conservation measures and the desire to participated in the tourist destination visited. Accommodation, tourist attractions and tourism products
others that offer back to nature concept increasingly in demand by the market.

But should the providers of tourism services, tourist destinations and local governments who wish oriented ecotourism should have its own policies and programs related to environmental conservation, local cultures and benefit the local community. Because in many places, tourism products which are sold mostly to pin the word "eco" or "back to nature" just as a label to attract consumers, but not accompanied with the spirit of preserving or involve local communities in tourism product.

Ecotourism activities to be part of the natural attractions and has linkages with cultural and rural tourism. Ecotourism is not even directly related to tourism which is a challenge / adventure or adventure.
The difference, in ecotourism, tourist activity is more focused on the observation and understanding of nature and culture in the areas visited, with the support of conservation activities as well as more major facilities and services provided by local communities.

In nature tourism, tourists enjoy only limited activity on the natural visited without taking into consideration the support of natural and cultural preservation and use of facilities and services of the local community. While on a more challenging tourism / adventure (adventure), highlight the activities undertaken physical activity  challenge to show ego and ability to conquer certain conditions on the nature of visit.

Definition Of Ecotourism (part 1)

Ecotourism must be understood through the two sides: 1) Ecotourism from terms of concept and 2) Ecotourism in terms of the market.

Ecotourism from terms of concept
Ecotourism is responsible tourism which is in natural places, as well as contribute to the preservation of the public welfare local (Ties - The International Ecotourism Society, with little modification).
According to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism Republic of Indonesia, ecotourism is a concept of sustainable tourism development that aims to support efforts to conserve the environment (natural and cultural) and to increase participation communities in the management, thus providing economic benefits to local communities and government. Ecotourism has many definitions are entirely principled on tourism activities are based on five key elements namely:
  • Provide experience and education to tourists that can increase understanding against tourist destination visited. Education is provided through an understanding of the importance of environmental conservation, while experience is provided through the activities of a creative tour accompanied by excellent service.
  • Minimizing the negative impact that could damage the environment and cultural characteristics in the areas visited.
  • Involve the community in the management and implementation.
  • Provide economic benefits especially to local communities, for that, ecotourism activities should be profitable (profitable).
  • Can continue to survive and sustainable.
In ecotourism, the principle of responsibility and respect nature and the local culture becomes very important. Tourists must adapt to the culture and local situation, not vice versa. Travelers should also realize the importance of preservation environment and respect the culture of the region he visited.
